Bonding with your pet this Love Your Pet Day and everyday

It’s the month of love, and with Valentine’s Day here and Love Your Pet fast approaching, many devoted pet parents won’t hide the fact that their furry friends are the true love of their lives! From walkies to playtime, there’s lots of fun ways you can spend time together to help you feel closer than ever…

Play together, stay together

Playing games and encouraging fun with your pet is a great way to strengthen your bond. When we play with our furry friends, they’ll start to associate you with those fun and playful emotions - making them want to spend more time with you!

If you’re struggling to keep their attention, switching up your pet’s toys is a great way to keep them stimulated. Catnip toys can keep your kitten entertained for hours, and tough toys are perfect for most dogs. In keeping with the theme of love, we’d recommend the Yeowww Heart Attack and our Battersea Rubber Heart Treat Toy to encourage play time fun.

Training and exercise

When it comes to man’s best friend, training is not only a great way to teach good behaviour, but it can also deepen the connection between you both. Whether you’re teaching basic commands or fancy tricks, praise or treats as a reward is a sure fire way to help your dog to tune into and love you even more.

If you’re looking for something with a little less fuss, getting out and about is also an ideal way to keep you and your pet fit whilst spending quality time together. Exercising side by side on walks or runs (depending on your dog's activity level) is an enjoyable routine that benefits you both - plus, our Reflective Exercise Lead means you can get out and about safely.

Plenty of attention

It may seem obvious, but providing your pet with lots of love and attention is a key part of growing your bond. Joining them on the floor, cosying up on the sofa and petting your four-legged friend with some extra effort will provide them with the security and comfort that makes them feel part of the family.

When it comes to our feline friends, let your cat initiate bonding time. Kneading, purring and sitting beside you are all signs they want to grow closer.

You can also tie in cuddle time with the occasional grooming session. Bonding through brushing will maintain your pet’s coat and with gentle encouragement, will become an experience you both enjoy. A Soft Protection Moult Stoppa will do just the trick!

Keep a routine

Our pets thrive on a consistent schedule and knowing what to expect from you will only grow your relationship and their trust further.

Sticking to what they know is also a great way to bond when introducing a new pet into your life. Our feline friends in particular are creatures of habit, so sticking to routines, commands and foods they know already will help during any transitional periods, helping your pet take comfort in their new surroundings.

What about my small pet?

Building a bond with your small pet - whether it’s a chinchilla, hamster or guinea pig - will only enrich your relationship with them.

A great way to establish a relationship with your little one is by hand feeding. This may take a little while, but once they start to associate you with positive things and reward, you’ll have them eating out of the palm of your hand - literally! For a treat they can’t resist, we’d recommend our Apple & Pansy Nibble Hearts or the Autumn Harvest.

However, every pet is different - so just make sure you’re bonding on their terms!
